1920s French Black Plush Velvet Cocoon Coat – L. Musseau, Blois

An extraordinary antique French coat dating to the 1920s, with a beautifully enveloping cocoon silhouette and an exceptionally luxurious black plush velvet exterior.

The fabric is particularly striking: a deep black long-pile velvet, with a dense, soft surface that creates an almost fur-like appearance while remaining a woven pile textile. The direction of the pile catches the light differently across the coat, creating subtle variations of rich black and charcoal and giving the otherwise minimal exterior wonderful depth and movement.

The coat has the wonderfully enveloping cocoon silhouette characteristic of 1920s outerwear, cut generously through the body with a softly rounded line and broad shawl collar. Two large textured black buttons form the simple front fastening, allowing the extraordinary fabric and sculptural shape to take centre stage.

The interior is an absolute highlight. The coat is fully lined in a beautiful patterned cotton in muted blue-grey, teal, black and cream, with a stylised repeating Art Deco-era design. The contrast between the restrained black exterior and elaborate lining is particularly special.

At the back neck is the original woven label reading “Sois à l’Hermine – L. Musseau – Blois – 1888.” The 1888 date forms part of the historic maker’s label and should not be interpreted as the date of the coat itself. The construction, silhouette and styling of the garment are consistent with a 1920s date.

A remarkable surviving piece of French antique outerwear, now around a century old, and still incredibly wearable. Its generous proportions are integral to the design — it looks especially beautiful worn with the slightly oversized, enveloping silhouette seen here.

Condition

Very good antique condition, particularly considering its age.

The black plush velvet remains beautifully rich and dense, with natural variations to the pile and minor signs of age and wear consistent with an approximately century-old garment. The patterned lining is remarkably well preserved and the original woven label remains intact.

No significant holes, tears or major structural flaws noted.
