Beschreibung
An exceptional original Edwardian lingerie dress dating to approximately the 1910s, constructed from fine white cotton and an extraordinary amount of delicate lace insertion.
The dress has a beautifully fitted, elongated silhouette with a square neckline and sleeveless cut. The bodice is constructed from alternating vertical panels of fine floral lace and embroidered cotton, continuing into the skirt in an incredibly elaborate arrangement of lace insertion. Particularly beautiful are the geometric side panels, where narrow bands of cotton and lace radiate outwards before meeting further lace panels around the lower skirt. A softly gathered lace flounce finishes the hem.
Around the neckline and shoulder straps are openwork embroidered bands designed for ribbon threading. This type of detail was common in fine Edwardian lingerie and lingerie-style garments, allowing the wearer to personalise the piece with silk ribbon. We have left these unthreaded so that the next owner can choose whether to wear the dress as it is or add ribbon in their preferred colour.
The lightweight white cotton, extensive lace insertion and delicate openwork are characteristic of the elaborate whitework and lingerie dressing fashionable during the Edwardian period. Pieces of this kind grew from the beautifully worked undergarments and lingerie-inspired dresses of the early 20th century, when fine cotton, lace, embroidery and ribbon-threaded details became increasingly decorative and visible. Today, surviving examples are highly collectible and particularly beautiful worn as summer dresses or unconventional antique bridal pieces.
The dress fastens with a row of buttons. We have styled these at the back, although the construction is beautiful from either side. The buttons appear to have been replaced individually over the dress’s long life: they vary slightly in size and material, with some appearing to be mother-of-pearl and others later replacements.
A truly remarkable antique piece, and particularly special because the extensive fine lace has survived in such exceptional condition. It would make an incredible Edwardian summer dress or a wonderfully romantic, understated antique wedding dress.
Condition
Exceptional antique condition, particularly considering the age and delicacy of the construction. The lace is remarkably well preserved, with no significant holes or tears noted. The buttons are mismatched and appear to include replacements added at different points during the dress’s life. Minor signs of age and wear may be present, as expected in a garment over a century old.
Because this is a genuine antique garment with extensive delicate lacework, we recommend allowing ease between the garment and body measurements rather than wearing it skin-tight.
