Vintage 1940s–60s Palestinian Embroidered Black Thobe Dress

An extraordinary vintage Palestinian or possibly Jordanian thobe, believed to date from the mid-20th century, featuring exceptionally beautiful hand-worked floral embroidery in a vibrant palette of lime green, cobalt blue, violet, pink, orange and red against a deep black background.

The most striking feature is the elaborately embroidered chest panel, with geometric V-shaped bands filled with tiny flowers and foliage. Colourful floral bouquets continue down the full length of the dress, both front and back, while narrow multicoloured striped bands frame the long vertical panels. The three-quarter-length sleeves feature additional floral embroidery around the cuffs.

The silhouette is traditional and beautifully relaxed, with a gently gathered front beneath the embroidered bodice, a generous A-line shape and a long, flowing skirt. A small tasselled tie finishes the neckline.

The fabric is lightweight, smooth and fluid, with a subtle sheen, possibly an early rayon or rayon-cotton blend. The exact composition is unknown.

According to the previous owner, the dress was purchased from an antique shop in Jerusalem during the 1970s. While its exact age and regional origin cannot be confirmed, the traditional construction and hand embroidery suggest a genuine vintage garment, possibly dating from the 1940s–60s.

Vintage condition with visible signs of age and wear, particularly some loose threads on the reverse of the embroidery and around the decorative striped bands, as photographed. Further condition details can be provided upon request.
