Beschreibung
An exceptional embroidered hostess robe dating to the 1920s, beautifully reflecting the glamour and craftsmanship of the Art Deco era.
Cut in an elegant kimono-inspired silhouette, it is embroidered throughout with delicate trailing florals, culminating in an exquisite peacock border that transforms it into a true work of wearable textile art. Remarkably preserved in exceptional condition for its age, it is a museum-worthy example of 1920s textile artistry.
Originally worn over fine silk lingerie while entertaining at home, these luxurious robes embodied the relaxed elegance of the period. Today, its timeless design lends itself to endless possibilities—worn open as a dramatic duster, belted with heels as an unforgettable evening gown, or simply as it was originally intended, as an exquisite boudoir robe.
Its fluid cut allows it to drape beautifully on a wide variety of body shapes, making it a wonderfully versatile piece for both collectors and contemporary wardrobes alike.
Material
The exact fibre composition has not been scientifically confirmed, as there is no excess fabric available for fibre testing.
The robe is made from a beautiful lightweight crepe with a soft, fluid drape. Based on its appearance and handle, it is likely silk crepe, rayon crepe (art silk), or a blend of the two—an entirely plausible combination for a luxury garment of the 1920s.
The embroidery appears to have been executed using a period Schiffli embroidery machine, a highly refined technique widely used on high-quality garments during the era, resulting in the exceptionally detailed floral and peacock design seen throughout the robe.
Condition
Exceptional antique condition. Wonderfully preserved for its age of over 100 years, with vibrant embroidery, a beautiful drape and only minimal signs of wear consistent with age. Please refer to photographs for full condition details.
