Description
A wonderfully romantic hand embroidered folk blouse dating to approximately the late 1930s or 1940s. Crafted from an ethereal semi-sheer chiffon-like fabric in a soft ivory-cream tone with the faintest hint of pale lemon, it is richly decorated with vibrant floral embroidery in shades of cherry red, cornflower blue, sunshine yellow, olive green, and blush pink.
The blouse features beautifully gathered sleeves, hand-worked shirring at the neckline, cuffs, and waist, and a delicate mother-of-pearl button closure at the neckline. Particularly striking are the embroidered shoulders and chest panel, where floral motifs frame intricate geometric stitching in a traditional folk-inspired arrangement.
Lightweight and airy, yet remarkably detailed, it embodies the romantic craftsmanship of pre-war and wartime folk-inspired dress. The semi-sheer fabric creates a beautiful softness when worn, while the fitted shirred waist gives the blouse a flattering silhouette.
Condition
Very good vintage condition.
Light signs of age and wear consistent with a garment of this age. Embroidery remains vibrant and beautifully preserved. The fabric retains lovely drape and transparency throughout.
Material
Likely rayon or viscose chiffon.
Mother-of-pearl button closure.
Styling
Beautiful worn with high-waisted denim, prairie skirts, wide-leg linen trousers, or layered beneath embroidered waistcoats and folk jackets. The vivid floral embroidery pairs particularly well with faded denim, suede, and romantic Edwardian-inspired pieces. A wonderful blouse for folk, cottagecore, bohemian, and collector wardrobes.
Historical Notes
This blouse displays many characteristics associated with Eastern European folk embroidery from the 1930s and 1940s. The gathered neckline, hand-worked shirring, richly embroidered floral motifs, and lightweight semi-sheer fabric all point toward an earlier mid-century date rather than the polyester folk revival pieces that became widespread during the 1970s.
The colourful floral embroidery reflects regional folk traditions that influenced both traditional dress and fashion blouses throughout Central and Eastern Europe during the first half of the twentieth century. Pieces combining delicate sheer fabrics with such vibrant embroidery are increasingly sought after for their craftsmanship and distinctive romantic aesthetic.
