Size & Fit

Size & Fit

Approximately EU 36 / UK 8 / US 4.

The body itself is relatively generous through the bust, but the shirred waist, upper-arm width and cropped length are the more important fit considerations. The waist has some flexibility due to the hand shirring.

The blouse is intentionally very cropped and may sit slightly higher when worn as the shirred waist naturally draws the fabric upward.

Shown on a model who wears approximately EU 36.

Description

A beautiful original 1930s–40s Eastern European blouse, entirely handmade from an exceptionally fine, almost weightless white cotton batiste with elaborate embroidery in vivid cobalt, cornflower and pale blue.

The workmanship on this piece is wonderful. Dense floral embroidery surrounds the wide neckline, interspersed with intricate openwork, while tiny embroidered motifs are scattered across the sheer sleeves. Further elaborate embroidery decorates the lower sleeves, with hand-worked smocking/shirring at the cuffs and waist. The cropped hem is finished with a delicate scalloped embroidered edge.

The neckline can be worn wide and open across the collarbones or drawn in slightly using the original blue ties, finished with handmade tassels. The lightweight, semi-sheer cotton gives the blouse a wonderfully airy quality, while the gathered body and sleeves contrast beautifully with the fitted, shirred waist.

A very special heirloom textile that remains remarkably wearable — beautiful with high-waisted denim, skirts or layered over a simple slip.

Condition

Very good antique/vintage condition, particularly considering its age and delicate construction.

There are some loose threads within the embroidery and small inconsistencies in the hand embroidery, stitching and shirring, particularly around the cuffs and waist. These are characteristic of the blouse’s handmade construction rather than modern machine-made uniformity. No significant holes or damage noted.
