1930s/40s Romanian Traditional Blouse

An extraordinary mid-century Romanian folk blouse in heavily textured white cotton with intricate black embroidery, dramatic gathered sleeves, and beautiful handmade lace insertion work throughout. Pieces like this were traditionally worn as part of regional Romanian dress and are becoming increasingly difficult to find in such wearable condition — especially examples with this level of textile texture and delicate construction.

This blouse has an incredible sculptural quality when worn. The dense crinkled cotton creates volume through the body and sleeves, while the sheer lace panels soften the silhouette beautifully. The monochrome black embroidery gives it a strikingly modern feel despite its age — almost graphic in appearance.

The sleeves are especially beautiful, featuring elaborate lace cuffs and gathered shaping that creates a romantic balloon silhouette. The blouse appears to have been shortened at some point in its life, likely from a longer traditional garment or dress, resulting in a cropped proportion that works surprisingly well with modern styling.

The cotton has a wonderful substantial hand — somewhere between homespun crepe cotton and woven seersucker — with rich texture throughout. The lace insertion and netted panels appear handmade or semi-handmade and give the piece a much more authentic regional feel than later tourist-market folk blouses.

Very good vintage condition with age-appropriate wear. Some small areas of wear, irregularities and minor loose threads to lace/netted sections. Hem appears likely shortened/altered historically. Presents beautifully overall and remains very wearable.
