1930s Hungarian Embroidered Blouse

A truly beautiful 1930s hand-embroidered Hungarian blouse, made from a whisper-light cotton batiste. The blouse features vibrant folk floral embroidery in bright tones of blue, orange, red and green, with chain and satin stitch detailing. The neckline is elasticised and can be worn slightly off the shoulders, finished with a red tie. Sleeves are short with puffed volume and embroidery panels, while the back is cut into a wide, open scoop shape – an unexpected and striking detail that makes this blouse especially rare.

Hungarian peasant blouses of this era were often worn both in their original rural context and later adapted into fashionable wardrobes across Europe. They became highly sought after in the 1930s–40s as symbols of artisanal craftsmanship and individuality, and today they remain timeless in their appeal.

Styling
This piece can be worn effortlessly over denim for a relaxed, bohemian look, or paired with a flowing skirt for a more romantic feel. The open back makes it perfect for summer layering, but it can also be styled with a slip top underneath for a modern, wearable approach.

Condition
Good for its age with some signs of wear consistent with age which do not impact wearability, but which have been taken into consideration when pricing. There is a repaired hole on the midriff which has been repaired but is visible, and some pinholes which could be repaired if desired,  though I has been left untouched to preserve the authenticity and original character of the blouse. Two tiny marks (possibly rust) on the back- not noticeable when worn. Embroidery remains vivid and intact.

Fits like: M-small L / EU 38–40 / UK 10–12 / US 6–8. Despite the generous bust width, the fixed waistband (no stretch) and narrow sleeve openings limit the fit. Shoulders must pass comfortably through the waistband opening when dressing.
