1930s Floral Rayon Taffeta Hostess Gown / Housecoat

A breathtaking authentic 1930s hostess gown in the softest blush peach rayon taffeta with an all-over oversized floral print in powder blue, butter yellow, soft coral and teal green.

This piece embodies the dramatic glamour of late 1930s boudoir and hostesswear, with exaggerated puff sleeves, a sweeping shawl collar, an elegant wrap silhouette and an extraordinarily fluid skirt with bias-cut inset panels creating beautiful movement through the hem. The effect when worn is incredibly cinematic — somewhere between old Hollywood dressing gown and romantic evening coat.

The fabric has a luminous sheen typical of period rayon taffeta, but unlike stiffer later synthetics it remains soft, fluid and beautifully draped. Though originally intended as luxurious at-home attire, this translates effortlessly into modern wear as a statement dress, evening piece or layered duster-style gown.

The wrap construction fastens with a single interior press stud and ties at the waist with an exceptionally long and dramatic sash tie, allowing the fit to be adjusted and cinched in.

Condition:

Very good wearable vintage condition with only minor signs of age consistent with delicate 1930s rayon taffeta. There are two small repaired holes to the back shoulder area, a repair to the collar neckline and some gentle colour variation/fading to the lower skirt panels. There may also be the occasional tiny pinhole or minor sign of wear upon close inspection. Overall presents beautifully and remains highly wearable. Please study photos carefully.
