1930s Floral Silk Chiffon Cape Jacket/Bolero

An extraordinarily ethereal late 1930s silk georgette capelet in a painterly floral print against an inky black ground, scattered with soft pink, ivory, blue and butter-yellow blooms. The silhouette is pure pre-war romance — fluid fluttering cape sleeves, a delicate neck tie fastening and dramatic drape that moves beautifully with the body.

The construction of this piece strongly suggests genuine 1930s origin: entirely hand-finished with French seams, delicate rolled hems, period-style hook and eye fastening and no overlocking or modern synthetic finishing techniques. The fabric has also been confirmed via burn test as genuine silk georgette — exceptionally soft, fine and fluid in a way far more commonly associated with original 1930s pieces than later revival garments, which were typically produced in polyester chiffon or other synthetic fabrics. The print itself also carries many characteristics associated with late 1930s florals.

However, because the colours remain unusually vivid and fresh, as well as the extra Glied Design Element, there remains a small possibility that this could be an exceptionally well-made 1970s revival piece inspired by 1930s design. To the best of my knowledge, taking into account the silk quality, hand construction and finishing techniques, I believe it to be authentic to the 1930s.

The capelet slips on through arm openings and drapes into open flutter sleeves, creating a silhouette somewhere between Old Hollywood dressing gown glamour and Stevie Nicks romanticism. Particularly beautiful layered over slips, lingerie or simple bias dresses.

Condition:
Excellent vintage condition overall with remarkable preservation for such a delicate silk piece. There is one small old repair/pull to the silk and minor signs of wear consistent with age, but nothing that detracts from wearability or overall beauty.
