Description

A beautiful hand-embroidered folk blouse dating most likely to the late 1930s to early 1940s, crafted from a soft, finely woven cotton cheesecloth in a warm cream tone. Pieces like this were traditionally made in Central and Eastern Europe and are admired for their intricate hand embroidery and delicate textile work.

The blouse features finely worked geometric embroidery panels running vertically down the bodice and along the sleeves in earthy olive green and rust tones. The stitching is particularly delicate and precise, giving the piece a refined appearance compared to many later folk blouses.

The neckline is softly gathered with smocking and ties at the centre with slender cords finished with small tassels. The long sleeves are lightly bloused and decorated with beautifully balanced embroidered bands, creating that classic romantic folk silhouette.

The cotton gauze is slightly finer and lighter than many similar blouses and drapes beautifully when worn. Pieces like this became iconic bohemian wardrobe staples during the 1960s and 1970s when antique folk textiles were widely collected and worn with denim, suede and leather.

Condition

Very good vintage condition. The cotton remains soft and strong and the embroidery is vibrant and intact. There are a few extremely faint, small historical reddish marks on the lower front which appear to have been washed and are now barely visible. They are difficult to see even on close inspection but are documented in the photographs and reflected in the price.
