1940s Satin Zip-Up House Dress

An elegant original 1940s house dress, likely handmade, cut in a fluid satin with a very soft, silky hand. The fabric is unlabelled; most likely rayon or viscose, though silk cannot be ruled out. Beautiful drape and movement throughout.

Classic 1940s homewear silhouette with a softly shaped bodice, gently defined waist and relaxed underarm construction typical of the era (dolman-style ease rather than batwing). Softly gathered shoulders create a subtle puffed sleeve effect. Full metal zip closure through the front.

The skirt features a dramatic longer centre back panel that falls into a waterfall / fishtail-like drape — a detail often seen in late 1930s–1940s house dresses, adding unexpected glamour while remaining wearable.

Rich burgundy wine base with painterly, watercolour-style floral motifs in teal, lavender, coral and soft blue.

Originally designed as refined housewear, but very easy to style today — works beautifully with flats or boots for daytime, or dressed up with heels and statement outerwear for evening.

Condition:

Very good vintage condition. Light, age-appropriate signs of wear only. A few small, discreet hand stitches consistent with handmade garments of the period. No major flaws.
