Description
A beautifully softened and deeply expressive Afghan coat, entirely handmade in the 1960s-70s from soft suede and fully lined in natural sheepskin. This piece embodies everything that makes Afghan coats so enduring — craftsmanship, warmth, and a striking yet wearable presence — while standing apart through its unusually soft, lighter-toned embroidery.
The palette is what makes this coat particularly special: delicate pastel embroidery in soft blues, yellows and muted tones, a rare departure from the more commonly seen bold contrasts. Combined with the exceptionally soft suede, it gives the coat a gentler, almost sun-faded elegance that feels perfectly suited to transitional seasons — from crisp spring evenings to autumn light, and equally at home layered for winter.
The silhouette is easy and wearable, with a flattering straight cut and enough room to layer comfortably. The long, shaggy shearling trim frames the coat beautifully, adding movement and texture, while the back panel features a striking triangular motif — a subtle nod to traditional Afghan design elements.
As with all truly handmade garments of this era, this coat carries small irregularities and variations that speak to its construction and age. It is not factory-perfect, but rather a one-of-a-kind piece shaped by hand over time. There are no structural flaws — only the gentle imperfections that make vintage pieces like this so unique and impossible to replicate.
The sheepskin lining is soft and warm, offering natural insulation, though those with very sensitive skin may find it slightly itchy when worn against bare arms.
Condition
Good vintage condition with signs of wear consistent with age. The suede shows visible marks and a natural patina throughout. There is some thinning of the shearling under one underarm, and general wear in high-friction areas. These are not flaws, but part of the coat’s history and handmade nature, and do not affect its wearability.
