1970s Afghan Embroidered Cotton Folk Dress

A beautiful 1970s Afghan folk dress crafted from lightweight printed cotton and richly decorated with traditional embroidery and woven textile details.

The vibrant raspberry-red cotton is scattered with a delicate miniature floral print and beautifully contrasted by an elaborate handwoven and embroidered yoke in shades of crimson, burgundy, lavender and plum. The intricate geometric embroidery, decorative woven waistband and charming tassel trim create a wonderfully textural piece that reflects the rich textile traditions of Afghanistan and the surrounding region.

Unlike many heavily constructed Afghan dresses, this example is made from a surprisingly light and breathable cotton, making it particularly easy to wear while still retaining the striking visual impact for which these garments are celebrated.
