Description
A beautiful 1970s Afghan folk dress crafted from lightweight printed cotton and richly decorated with traditional embroidery and woven textile details.
The vibrant raspberry-red cotton is scattered with a delicate miniature floral print and beautifully contrasted by an elaborate handwoven and embroidered yoke in shades of crimson, burgundy, lavender and plum. The intricate geometric embroidery, decorative woven waistband and charming tassel trim create a wonderfully textural piece that reflects the rich textile traditions of Afghanistan and the surrounding region.
Unlike many heavily constructed Afghan dresses, this example is made from a surprisingly light and breathable cotton, making it particularly easy to wear while still retaining the striking visual impact for which these garments are celebrated. The fitted bodice flows into a softly gathered skirt, while the elasticated back waist provides a degree of flexibility and comfort.
During the 1960s and 1970s, traditional Afghan textiles and clothing became highly sought after throughout Europe and North America. Travellers along the Hippie Trail brought these remarkable garments home, where they became icons of bohemian style. Today, original examples remain highly collectible for their craftsmanship, textile artistry and cultural significance.
Condition
Excellent vintage condition.
The cotton remains strong and vibrant, with the embroidery, woven trim and tassels beautifully preserved. No significant flaws noted.
Styling
A wonderful piece worn simply with leather sandals and silver jewellery, or layered with boots and a vintage sheepskin coat during cooler months. Equally beautiful as an everyday statement dress or as part of a curated folk and textile collection.
