Description
Rare 1970s Afghan Gown
A breathtaking Afghan gown from the 1970s, an era when such pieces began appearing in Europe as symbols of global bohemian style. These gowns, often made for especially for Western tourists and worn to weddings and other festivities, carry centuries of tradition in their textiles: hand-dyed cottons, embroidered bodices, and sweeping silhouettes that reflected both local artistry and cultural pride. By the 1970s, travellers and artists brought them to the West, where they became prized by free-spirited circles in cities like London, Paris, and Berlin. Surviving examples today are rare, especially in this dramatic, gown-like form with its extraordinary fullness and angel sleeves.
This piece is best described as a gown rather than a dress, with sculptural drape and incredible presence when worn. The abundant fabric is silky plisée, most likely rayon or acetate. There are quite a few holes towards the bottom of the skirt, and this is fully reflected in the price. Thanks to the dark fabric and the generous volume of material, they get lost in the folds and movement, making them barely noticeable. The gown remains highly wearable, with its flaws hidden in its drama and sweep.
Styling
Wear belted for structure or loose for maximum volume. Perfect paired with boots, silver jewellery, or layered textiles — honouring its Afghan roots while also nodding to the 1970s bohemian revival.
Condition
Overall good vintage condition for age. Quite a few holes at the bottom of the skirt (see photos), reflected in the pricing. Fortunately, these flaws disappear into the fabric when worn, keeping the gown highly wearable and dramatic. Strong and intact elsewhere.
