1970s Cotton Gauze Caftan Style Maxidress with Angel Wing Sleeves- Unlabelled Ayesha Davar

1970s Indian cotton gauze dress, unlabelled but almost certainly Ayesha Davar, in a rich red floral block print with contrasting border panels.

This piece was sourced as part of a small collection of identical dresses in different colourways, several of which retained their original Ayesha Davar labels. While this example is unlabelled, the construction, fabric, and print are entirely consistent with documented Davar pieces, and the same textile can be found on labelled examples.

This dress is pure movement.
It transforms completely on the body — the kind of piece that only reveals itself in motion. The silhouette is almost anthropomorphic: structured and grounded through the bodice, yet fluid and winged through the sleeves. As you move, the fabric lifts and falls in soft, weightless waves, creating a butterfly-like effect — airy, ephemeral, and deeply expressive.

Crafted from an exceptionally light, semi-sheer cotton gauze, it feels almost intangible against the skin. The bodice panel provides gentle structure through the underbust, before releasing into a long, flowing skirt that moves effortlessly with every step.

The sleeves are the defining feature: dramatic, wing-like panels attached at the back, forming a cape-like extension of the body. They do not simply drape — they animate. The result is something between garment and gesture, human and something more instinctive, almost animal in its movement.

Finished with a back zip closure (YKK) and hook-and-eye fastening. A rare and highly collectible example of 1970s Indian boutique export design.
