Description

A beautiful and vibrant hand embroidered folk dress dating to the late 1920s to early 1930s, crafted from soft black crepe and decorated with richly coloured floral embroidery. The fabric is a lightweight rayon crepe — a material that became extremely fashionable during the late 1920s when “art silk” fabrics allowed designers to create fluid, elegant garments with beautiful drape.

The dress features a striking embroidered chest panel framed by delicate stitching, filled with stylised flowers in vivid shades of pink, red, blue, yellow and green. The embroidery continues onto the sleeves and forms a decorative border along the hem of the skirt, creating a balanced and visually striking composition.

The bodice and waist are finished with intricate smocking which gathers the fabric into fine pleats while providing flexibility and comfort in the fit. This technique was widely used in folk-influenced garments during the late 1920s and early 1930s and creates a flattering silhouette while maintaining the soft drape of the fabric.

The deep embroidered neckline and gently gathered sleeves add to the romantic folk aesthetic of the piece. Dresses like this were inspired by traditional Eastern European embroidery and became highly fashionable during the interwar years when folk textile traditions influenced European fashion.

The dress now features a nylon side zip which was clearly added later for ease of dressing; originally it likely closed with press studs or another period fastening. The overall construction, materials and embroidery clearly indicate its earlier date.

A truly joyful and rare antique piece that remains wonderfully wearable today — equally beautiful styled with boots and knitwear or worn simply as a statement dress.

Condition

Very good antique condition. There are two small mended areas on the front of the skirt as well as a repair under one arm. The dress also has a later added nylon side zip. Otherwise the embroidery remains bright and the fabric is strong and wearable. Considering the dress is nearly a century old, it remains in remarkably beautiful and wearable condition.
