Description
Early 20th Century Silk Embroidered Folk Bodice
A breathtaking piece of wearable history, this early 20th century bodice or corset cover is crafted from luminous green silk and lavishly hand-embroidered with richly symbolic floral motifs. The cropped, sleeveless cut and side hook-and-eye closures suggest it was originally worn as part of festive folk dress—most likely from Eastern Europe, possibly Hungary or Ukraine.
The exuberant garden of poppies, sunflowers, daisies, and forget-me-nots is more than decorative. In traditional embroidery, each flower carries meaning: poppies for remembrance and vitality, sunflowers for loyalty and prosperity, daisies for innocence, and forget-me-nots for enduring love. This vivid, joyful stitching aligns with early 20th-century Hungarian Matyó or Ukrainian vinok styles, where colour and density of embroidery symbolised wealth, fertility, and celebration.
Unlike German or Austrian Tracht, which typically uses darker wools and front-fastening bodices, this silk version reflects the more vibrant, free-flowing aesthetic seen in Eastern European ceremonial folkwear. The combination of fine silk and spectacular handwork suggests it was worn on special occasions, possibly as a form of cultural or regional pride.
The garment fastens at the side with metal hook-and-eye closures and is unlined.
Styling notes: Beautiful worn layered over a slip dress, a crisp white shirt, or even styled as a corset top with modern tailoring. The cropped length and vivid embroidery make it an incredible statement piece.
