1970s David Butler for Pressler Structured Sleeve Maxi Dress
A dramatic and unusual 1970s piece from David Butler for Pressler, a lesser-documented British label that has since gained cult appeal among vintage collectors. This dress is a strong example of the brand’s flair for combining bold abstract prints with structured, sculptural tailoring — more in line with boutique labels of the time than mainstream fashion.
The fabric is a painterly, swirling abstract floral in tones of turquoise, pistachio and lilac hued grey with pops of chartreuse — printed on a lightweight cotton voile. The bodice is lined, the skirt is not though, so still carries a subtle transparency in movement and strong light.
The bodice is tailored with strong shoulders and lightly padded, winged cap sleeves — creating a silhouette that feels almost regal, with a subtle “coat of arms” effect. The fitted waist drops into a full, gathered skirt that balances the architectural top half with movement and ease. The sides of the bodice are shirt, creating not only texture and interest, but also a little stretch. Fastens at the back with a zip.

Pit to pit: 39cm relaxed, however the sides of the bodice are shirred, giving them considerable stretch. Stretches up to about 45cm comfortably.
