Description

1970s Char Hand-Painted Suede Tunic Vest / Mini Dress

From the highly collectible label Char, this 1970s long tunic vest is a true piece of wearable art. Char was a cult California brand founded in the late 1960s, known for its handcrafted suede and leather garments, often painted or appliquéd with bold, psychedelic motifs. These pieces were produced in small quantities, making them rare on today’s market and highly sought after by collectors.

This example, in rich berry suede, is entirely hand-painted with a floral and ivy motif across the bodice, laced at the front with suede ties. Its cut features a fitted waist that drops into pleats, giving movement and shape whether worn as a vest or styled as a daring mini dress. Each piece by Char is unique, painted freehand by artisans, ensuring no two garments are the same.

Styling

Wear it layered over a blouse and boots for a folk-inspired bohemian look, or style it alone as a mini dress with sandals for a true 70s festival vibe. For contemporary wear, it also works beautifully over a slip dress or slim denim.

Condition

Excellent vintage condition. The suede remains supple, and the painted surface is vibrant with only the lightest signs of age. No major flaws.
