Edwardian White Cotton Lace Day Dress c.1905–1912

A beautiful and highly evocative Edwardian white cotton day dress dating to the early 20th century, circa 1905–1912. This is a finely made example of the period, richly detailed with cotton lace, embroidery and applied lace panels throughout the bodice and skirt. The dress features a high lace neckline, softly structured long sleeves and a long, elegant skirt, creating the unmistakable silhouette of the Edwardian era.

The dress fastens at the back with mother-of-pearl buttons running approximately 62 cm down the centre back, with metal press studs at the back of the neckline. The bodice is delicately pleated and softly cut, giving a slightly relaxed, almost batwing-like drape through the chest despite the very small overall proportions. The waist panel is lace-covered and lined in cotton, with no stretch or give, reflecting original Edwardian construction intended to be worn over a corset.

Due to the extremely small waist measurement and lack of stretch, this dress is best suited to a very petite modern XS. It was originally designed to be worn with a corset, and may still be worn that way today for an authentic Edwardian fit. On a contemporary body without corsetry, it will fit only a very small waist and frame. As shown, it did not fully close on the model.

Condition is very good for its age of over 110 years. There are small scattered pinholes and areas of wear consistent with age, particularly within the lace, including some small gaps and thinning around the neckline lace. These are subtle and do not detract from the overall beauty of the piece. There are some button and buttonhole irregularities at the waist which are being addressed. No major structural issues.
