Edwardian White Embroidered Cotton Lawn Dress

An exquisite antique Edwardian white cotton dress dating to approximately the 1900s–1910s. Made from a substantial, softly textured cotton with a subtle slubbed/nubbed surface and an extraordinary amount of decorative handwork.

The fitted bodice features delicate pintucking, floral whitework embroidery, openwork details and beautiful lace insertion sweeping across the shoulders and neckline. Further lace insertion trims the sleeves, while the long skirt is extensively decorated with trailing floral embroidery and large openwork floral motifs.

The high neckline, gently gathered bodice and long, softly flared skirt give it that unmistakable Edwardian silhouette. It closes down the back with a series of press studs extending approximately 60 cm.

Although traditionally this style could be described as an Edwardian white or lawn dress, the cotton here is somewhat more substantial than the very fine, sheer cotton lawn often associated with the term. An exceptional antique summer dress and an especially beautiful alternative wedding dress — perfect for a relaxed, romantic or civil summer wedding.

Unlined. It can be worn with a slip or petticoat underneath or as is.

Condition

Excellent antique condition, particularly considering its age of well over 100 years. There are occasional pulled or loose threads and other very minor signs of age and wear, but nothing that detracts from the overall appearance. The embroidery, lace and openwork remain remarkably beautiful and the dress presents exceptionally well.
