Midcentury Chinese Silk Embroidered Robe

A spectacular mid-20th century silk robe in vibrant carmine red, richly embroidered with circular floral medallions, butterflies, and sprays of blossoms. The embroidery is hand-stitched in shimmering silk threads of pink, green, gold, and blue, framed by contrasting ivory cuffs and borders. Its wide sleeves, straight cut, and flowing silhouette echo centuries of Chinese robe design, blending tradition with midcentury modern elegance.

By the mid-20th century, robes like this were still being produced in China and Hong Kong for both domestic use and export. They drew heavily on Qing dynasty and Republic-era patterns, but with updated materials, colour palettes, and tailoring that suited a growing international market. In the postwar decades, such robes became fashionable in the West as luxurious loungewear and as glamorous statement coats, often purchased as souvenirs or imported through specialist boutiques.

This example, preserved in impeccable condition, reflects both continuity and reinvention: a garment rooted in Chinese textile heritage, yet perfectly in tune with the cosmopolitan elegance of the 1950s–70s.

Styling

Wear it as intended as luxurious loungewear, or style it as outerwear over evening dress for maximum drama. It also pairs beautifully with modern tailoring, denim, or wide-leg trousers, making it as versatile as it is opulent.

Condition

Excellent. The silk satin is lustrous, the embroidery crisp and intact, with no flaws noted. A rare survivor in such pristine state.
