Description

A striking and beautifully constructed Edwardian day dress dating to the early 20th century, featuring an intricate layered design that gives the garment both structure and softness. This dress combines a substantial cotton underdress with multiple layers of fine mesh and lace overlay, creating depth, movement and a distinctly romantic silhouette often associated with the Edwardian era.

The dress is built around a sturdy, opaque cotton underdress which provides shape and support. Over this sit two layers of fine mesh. In the Edwardian period, this type of mesh was typically made from cotton net or fine cotton tulle rather than modern synthetics. Crochet lace and delicate trims are used throughout, adding texture and refinement to the design.

The bodice is softly shaped with a high empire waist and a decorative lace panel beneath the bust, finished with gentle ruffles that define the empire line. The neckline is framed by a flounced lace ruffle collar and soft cap sleeves. There are no defined shoulder seams, contributing to the fluid, relaxed line of the upper body.

The skirt is layered, with a shorter mesh layer falling to around knee length and a longer mesh layer beneath, both worn over the full-length cotton underskirt. This layered construction creates movement and visual interest while remaining wearable and substantial. The dress fastens at the back with press studs running from the lower back to the neckline. Some press studs appear to be original and show age-related wear, while others have been replaced over time.

Measurements are taken flat and are approximate.

Please compare these measurements carefully to a similar garment you already own.

Condition is good for its age. The mesh layers remain intact and wearable, with no major structural damage. Some press studs show reduced grip due to age, and several have been replaced historically. Light signs of wear consistent with an authentic Edwardian garment are present, but nothing that detracts from its overall integrity or beauty.

Bust (pit to pit): 41 cm / 16.1 in

Underbust: 41 cm / 16.1 in

Empire waist: 37 cm / 14.6 in

Hips: 53 cm / 20.9 in

Neck opening width: 23 cm / 9.1 in

Arm opening: 14 cm / 5.5 in

Total length (shoulder to hem): 122 cm / 48.0 in

Although the measurements may appear small, the empire waist is relatively generous. The dress was worn by a model who is a modern EU 36 (XS–S), 160 cm tall, with a very small bust, and it sat too loosely at the waist, requiring pinning for a flattering fit. The cut and construction indicate that this dress is best suited to a modern S, and it may also work for a small M depending on bust and proportions.
