Vintage Afghan Kuchi Patchwork Dress with Beaded Shoulder Discs

A breathtaking and rare example of a vintage Afghan Kuchi dress, believed to date to the early 20th century or earlier. This extraordinary piece was brought to West Berlin from Afghanistan in the 1970s and was already considered very old at the time. It is a masterful patchwork of brightly coloured textiles, assembled using traditional techniques that repurpose older fragments — a hallmark of tribal craftsmanship.

The dress features dramatic wide sleeves, richly embroidered panels, mirrored accents, and striking beaded discs adorning each shoulder — adding an unmistakable ceremonial feel. The bodice is structured with a high empire waist, while the gathered skirt cascades in voluminous pleats to a mid-calf or ankle-grazing length depending on height. It is heavy, richly detailed, and saturated with history.

Best styled simply to let its artistry shine. A stunning option for photography, display, or collectors of folk and tribal dress. Due to its weight and age, it is more suited to occasional wear or display than regular use.

Construction & Material
Patchwork construction combining silks, cottons, brocade, embroidery, and mirrored embellishment. Beaded discs at the shoulders. Pulls on over the head and fastens with small hooks at the neckline.

Condition
Scatted holes, loose threads and general signs of wear. Due its age and the intricate and special nature of this piece, it has not been washed, and should not be washed. If cleaning is desired, must be taken to a professional. Please note this dress is between 50 and 100 years old and has lived an exciting life. She is not in perfect condition and is sold as is. But she is such a special piece, and so I have decided to let her tell her full story flaws and all. These small repairs should only be made by an expert- though she is structurally perfectly sound.
