Vintage Romanian Folk Blouse in Fine Cotton Gauze | c. 1915–1930

A particularly delicate and finely made Romanian folk blouse crafted from whisper-light cotton gauze and richly adorned with vivid red embroidery. Unlike many later folk blouses, this example displays exceptionally dense hand gathering across the back neckline, intricate hand-finished details, and a beautifully executed embroidered collar that speaks to an earlier generation of craftsmanship.

The dramatic deep V neckline is framed by floral embroidery and decorative openwork inserts in shades of crimson, raspberry and ivory. The sleeves feature additional embroidered panels, while the neckline, seams and cuffs are finished with contrasting red hand embroidery throughout.

What makes this blouse especially striking is the extraordinary fineness of the fabric and construction. The gauze is exceptionally lightweight and semi-sheer, creating a soft, ethereal silhouette that drapes beautifully when worn. The extensive gathering at the neckline and the amount of handwork involved suggest a garment rooted firmly in traditional village dress rather than later commercial folk production.

While precise dating of traditional Eastern European garments is notoriously difficult, the construction, materials and workmanship suggest a piece likely dating from the first third of the twentieth century.
