Late 20th Century Indian Zardozi-Style Embroidered Evening Bag

A richly worked Indian evening bag from the late 20th century (1960s-1970s) decorated with dense metal thread embroidery in a traditional zardozi-style technique. The surface is fully embellished with raised floral motifs formed from couched metallic threads, wirework and bead detailing, creating a tactile, sculptural finish.

The embroidery is worked on a dark textile ground and framed with a delicate beaded edge, giving the bag depth and contrast. Small inset stones add subtle points of light without overpowering the design. Finished with a twisted cord shoulder strap, the bag can be worn over the shoulder or crossbody.

Zardozi-style embroidery refers to metal thread techniques long used in South Asia, and by the later 20th century these methods were commonly adapted for decorative accessories such as bags and evening pieces. Condition

Excellent vintage condition. On very close inspection, there are small areas where some of the gold and metal thread has come away, and one small bead appears to be missing. These details are only noticeable upon careful examination and do not detract from the overall impact of the piece. The bag remains structurally sound and visually striking, with the embellishment largely intact and beautifully preserved for its age.
