1920s Silk Pongee Kimono Robe – Full-Length Floral Tissue Silk

A truly beautiful original 1920s silk kimono robe in exceptionally well-preserved condition. Made from an incredibly light, almost tissue-weight pongee silk, it has that wonderful fluidity of early silk loungewear while still being substantial enough to style as an outer layer.

The warm ivory ground is completely covered in a vivid Japanese-inspired floral print in coral red, cobalt and powder blue, fresh green and touches of soft orange. The scale and density of the print are particularly striking across the generous sleeves and full-length back.

Unlike many shorter vintage kimono jackets and dusters, this is a full-length robe, measuring 131 cm from shoulder to hem. The construction is wonderfully generous, with an extremely dropped shoulder and wide kimono sleeves creating that characteristic sweeping silhouette. It retains its original matching silk sash, allowing it to be wrapped closely at the waist or worn loose and open.

An incredibly versatile piece: wear it traditionally as a dressing gown or peignoir, open over a slip or dress, or styled as a dramatic lightweight coat over denim. Despite its delicacy and approximately century-old age, the silk presents beautifully.

Condition

Phenomenal antique condition. I can find no significant flaws to note. The silk remains remarkably beautiful, with the print still exceptionally fresh and vibrant.

As with all antique silk, this is a delicate textile and should be worn and stored with appropriate care.
