Description

An extraordinary antique Eastern European folk blouse, believed to date from the 1920s–30s, made from beautifully fine, semi-sheer black cotton batiste with intricate contrasting ivory-white embroidery.

A particularly unusual example of early folk clothing, with its striking black-and-white colour combination, elaborate floral embroidery and wonderfully romantic silhouette.

The beautifully embroidered neckline features a narrow V-shaped opening framed by intricate circular floral medallions. The generously gathered, billowing sleeves are equally spectacular, decorated with delicate embroidered floral trails and elaborate circular motifs, finishing in elasticated, softly ruffled cuffs.

The shoulders are softly gathered directly into the embroidered neckline, while the back features rows of decorative white shirring and a gathered, ruffled lower section.

Interestingly, the blouse has been altered at some point in its history, with the original shirred lower section removed from the front but retained at the back. The front has been neatly finished, creating a cropped silhouette that looks surprisingly contemporary. The difference is primarily noticeable from the side.

A remarkable piece of early 20th-century folk clothing, combining exceptional traditional craftsmanship with a wonderfully wearable modern shape.

Condition

Very good antique condition, particularly considering its estimated age.

No visible holes, rips or tears noted.

The original shirred lower section has been removed from the front and neatly finished, while the back remains intact. There are some loose threads within the original shirring at the back, consistent with age and wear.

These details are reflected in the price.
