Description
A beautiful hand embroidered folk blouse dating to approximately the late 1930s or 1940s. Crafted from an exceptionally soft and semi-sheer rayon-like fabric, this piece is decorated with vivid floral embroidery in cobalt blue, coral pink, golden yellow, and olive green, arranged around the neckline, sleeves, and bodice in a traditional folk-inspired design.
Unlike many later folk revival pieces, the blouse displays remarkable attention to detail throughout, including embroidered seam finishes, hand-worked shirring, and delicate decorative stitching along the neckline, cuffs, and waist. The softly gathered sleeves and cropped silhouette create an effortlessly romantic shape, while a tiny mother-of-pearl button finishes the neckline.
The embroidery combines floral motifs with geometric elements in a palette that feels both joyful and timeless. Lightweight and wonderfully wearable, it bridges traditional craftsmanship and modern styling with ease.
Condition
Very good vintage condition.
Light signs of age and wear consistent with a garment of this age. A few small scattered pulls to the delicate fabric and minor age-related marks may be present. No holes noted. Embroidery remains vibrant and beautifully preserved. Seams are intact and the blouse presents exceptionally well overall.
Material
Likely rayon or viscose.
Mother-of-pearl button closure.
Styling
Perfect paired with faded denim, suede skirts, embroidered waistcoats, prairie skirts, or antique-inspired lingerie pieces. The cropped silhouette works beautifully with high-waisted trousers and skirts, while the colourful embroidery makes it a standout piece for folk, bohemian, cottagecore, and collector wardrobes alike.
Historical Notes
This blouse displays many characteristics associated with Eastern European folk blouses produced during the 1930s and 1940s. The soft semi-sheer fabric, intricate embroidery, hand-worked shirring, decorative seam treatments, and mother-of-pearl closure all suggest an earlier date than the mass-produced polyester folk revival garments that became widespread during the 1970s.
Traditional folk embroidery served both decorative and symbolic purposes, with floral motifs commonly representing abundance, vitality, and regional identity. Garments such as this were often treasured for their craftsmanship and remain highly sought after today for the quality of their handwork and distinctive romantic aesthetic.
