1930s Black Silk Velvet Bias-Cut Gown with Devoré Poet Sleeves
Description
An exceptionally beautiful and authentic 1930s silk velvet gown, cut entirely on the bias for fluid movement and an elegant, body-skimming silhouette. This original dress features dramatic sheer devoré velvet sleeves with a floral burnout pattern, softly gathered at the wrist with original button closures. The bodice is softly structured with a shelf-bust construction and flows seamlessly into a full-length skirt that moves beautifully when worn.
A pointed dagger-style collar and a partially buttoned neckline, extending approximately 8 cm down from the collar, complete the look — a striking and highly characteristic detail of original 1930s eveningwear. The dress fastens with original press studs at the side, allowing it to be slipped on easily while maintaining a clean, uninterrupted line through the body. Entirely bias cut, the dress adapts naturally to the wearer and drapes fluidly. This piece can be worn traditionally as an elegant evening or formal gown, or styled in a more relaxed, bohemian direction with statement jewellery, boots, and layered outerwear for a 1970s Penny Lane–inspired look. Good vintage condition with moderate, age-appropriate signs of wear. No major flaws, tears, or structural damage. Small internal cotton belt loops are present; no belt remains, though this is subtle and does not affect wear or appearance.
