1930s–1940s Satin Peignoir Robe with Flared Panelled Skirt
Description
An exceptionally beautiful and fluid satin peignoir robe dating to the late 1930s to early 1940s. Originally designed as a lingerie or dressing gown, this piece is cut to drape softly over the body, with a gently gathered bust, a defined waist and an extraordinarily full, sweeping skirt created through inserted flared panels at the lower hem.
The robe features a deep V-neckline and fastens at the bust with two original button closures, as intended for wear layered over a slip, nightdress or pyjamas. The bodice is softly shaped, with the underarm and waist flowing into one another rather than being sharply tailored, creating a relaxed, elegant line through the upper body. From the waist, the skirt falls into generous volume. At the lower skirt, additional inserted panels add dramatic fullness and movement, giving the garment its sculptural, flowing silhouette and beautiful sweep when worn.
The satin has an exceptionally soft, liquid handle with a luminous sheen. While it closely resembles silk, peignoirs and lingerie of this period were very often made from high-quality rayon or viscose satin, which was widely used in the 1930s and 1940s. Without a fibre label, the exact material cannot be stated definitively; however, the drape, surface and weight are entirely consistent with fine rayon or viscose satin of the era.
Although originally intended as lingerie, this piece translates effortlessly into modern wear. It can be worn open over trousers or jeans, styled as shown for a relaxed yet striking contemporary look, or layered over a slip or nightdress in keeping with its original purpose. A rare example of a garment that feels both glamorous and highly wearable.
Measurements are taken flat and are approximate.
Please compare these measurements to a similar garment you already own to ensure the best fit.

Due to the relaxed bodice, gathered bust and open-front construction, this robe is forgiving through the upper body while the waist defines the silhouette. Best suited to a modern S–M, depending on desired fit and styling.
Condition is very good for its age. Some discolouration, or rather inconsistencies in the dye in some areas which looks rather intebtional (See pictures). The satin remains supple and fluid, with no major structural issues. Minor signs of age and wear may be present, as expected for a piece of this era, but nothing that detracts from its wearability or visual impact.
