Description
A striking original 1940s summer sundress in what is most likely a beautifully fluid cold rayon, printed with oversized painterly roses in vivid shades of violet, magenta and emerald green against a dramatic black ground. The saturated colours remain wonderfully vibrant, giving the dress a remarkably fresh, modern feel despite its age.
The fitted bodice features charming double shoulder straps and delicate floral appliqué created from the matching printed fabric, adding subtle sculptural detail to the neckline. Lightly padded cups provide gentle shaping, while fabric-covered buttons run the full length of the dress, allowing it to be worn fully closed or styled with a softly open front. The generous circular skirt moves beautifully and creates wonderful sweep with every step.
Likely handmade by a skilled home dressmaker using a commercial pattern, giving it all the character and individuality of bespoke mid-century clothing.
