1970s Embroidered Leather & Lambswool Jacket – Afghan Folkloric Crossover
Description
A truly exceptional and rare 1970s embroidered leather and lambswool jacket, rooted in the Afghan / Central Asian / Eastern European folkloric crossover tradition that circulated through Kabul, Istanbul and European markets in the late 1960s–70s.
This piece is defined by its extraordinarily dense all-over embroidery worked directly into leather panels, combined with an exceptionally thick, plush lambswool lining throughout. The result is a sculptural, insulating jacket with real presence and weight — far removed from later decorative or lightweight interpretations of the style.
The embroidery remains fully intact and richly textured, forming floral and geometric motifs across the body and sleeves. The lambswool lining is remarkably soft and voluminous, extending through the collar, front edges, cuffs and hem. Two hook-and-eye closures at the front allow the jacket to be worn closed or slightly open.
The leather beneath the embroidery has naturally firmed with age, which is typical for heavily embroidered leather garments of this era and construction. Minor historic repairs are present at the collar and are stable and discreet. There are no losses to the embroidery, no damage to the wool, and no structural issues.
An extraordinary collector’s piece — wearable, architectural, and deeply evocative of the international folkloric exchange of the 1970s.
Condition: Very good vintage condition.
Embroidery intact and well preserved.
Lambswool lining soft, dense and clean.
Historic repairs at some seams and at the collar, professionally stabilised.
Leather has naturally firmed with age, consistent with period and technique.
Fit & Size: Best suited to approx. EU 34–36, depending on what is worn underneath.
Please note: due to the extremely thick lambswool lining and structured, fully embroidered leather, this jacket wears significantly smaller than the flat measurements suggest. The fit becomes noticeably more snug when layered over bulkier garments or wide sleeves.
