1960s Heavily Embroidered Afghan Coat
Description
Exceptionally Rare 1960s–70s Afghan Shearling Coat with Silky Green Embroidery – A Psychedelic Rock 'n' Roll Icon
This is a true collector’s piece — an original hand-embroidered Afghan sheepskin coat from the late 1960s or early 70s, in an incredibly rare moss green base with silky green and orange embroidery. Handmade in Afghanistan during the height of the hippie trail era, each of these coats was a one-of-a-kind creation, combining regional folk traditions with global bohemian flair.
The swirling embroidery — while not symbolic in the Western sense — reflects traditional Afghan floral and vine motifs, often thought to represent protection, nature, and beauty. This version features particularly fine, shimmering green wool thread, giving the design a luminous texture against the soft suede. Fully lined with natural shearling, it’s trimmed in plush curly fleece along the collar, cuffs, and front opening.
These coats became style legends in the late 60s and early 70s, sold in iconic London boutiques like Granny Takes a Trip, Hung On You, and Biba, and worn by rock luminaries like Jimi Hendrix, John Lennon, and Mick Jagger. While similar pieces were mass-exported for a few years, coats of this quality, colour, and condition are exceptionally rare today.
📌 Condition: Very good vintage condition. The embroidery is fully intact with only minimal loose threads. The shearling remains soft and even throughout, however is not as bushy and lush as it would have been when first created. The suede is no longer as supple as it once was but remains strong and wearable, with no brittleness. A tear on the collar has been professionally repaired.
