Description

Vintage Pakistani Embroidered Velvet Caftan with Mirror Work (c. 1960s)

A striking and richly textured velvet caftan, hand-embroidered in vivid red geometric motifs and studded with tiny mirror discs, known as shisha embroidery. Likely originating from Sindh or Punjab, this piece reflects traditional artisan techniques that have been practiced for centuries.

Caftans such as this were originally worn as everyday or ceremonial garments in South Asia, but became highly sought after in the West during the 1960s and 70s, when fashion icons and travellers alike embraced global styles and artisan-made textiles. The Beatles' trip to India and a broader countercultural fascination with Eastern mysticism and craftsmanship helped popularise garments like this among bohemians and rockstars alike.

This example is made from plush black velvet and falls to mid-calf with a slightly flared silhouette. The neckline is open, the sleeves wide and dramatic. Though likely intended as a traditional kurta or over-dress, it works effortlessly as a modern layering piece—perfect over wide-leg denim and platforms, or belted as a standalone statement.
