1970s Afghan Coat

An exceptional 1970s shearling “Penny Lane” coat in a rich, warm brown suede, distinguished by its dramatic oversized collar and beautifully executed embroidery in tones of cream, mustard and deep pink.

The colour of the suede is particularly striking — a soft, glowing brown that pairs effortlessly with the vibrant embroidered detailing running along the seams and edges. The coat is finished with multiple types of shearling, from dense inner lining to long, fluid curls at the collar, cuffs and hem, creating a sense of depth and movement throughout.

The collar is a true statement — wide, plush and almost Peter Pan in shape, framing the shoulders with voluminous, cascading shearling. The sleeves are finished with especially long shearling trim, enhancing that iconic 1970s silhouette.

Fully lined in thick, natural shearling, the coat is exceptionally warm. As with many original Afghan and shearling pieces, the interior wool retains its natural texture and may feel slightly textured against the skin for very sensitive wearers — this is characteristic of authentic garments of this kind.

Condition

Very good vintage condition with signs of wear consistent with age and handmade construction. A professional repair has been made at the underarm seam.

There are three front closures: one metal loop is missing and another shows some oxidation. The coat still fastens, and a new loop could easily be sewn on, but this is still reflected in the price.

Please note on wear and sensitivity

This coat is fully lined in genuine shearling (lambskin with wool). Natural shearling, especially in vintage garments, is not commercially processed in the same way as modern mass-produced pieces. While this particular coat feels soft and plush, individual sensitivity varies. Some people who are highly sensitive to wool textures may find shearling coats slightly scratchy, particularly if worn with short sleeves. We recommend wearing with a light layer underneath if you have sensitive skin.
