Description
A spectacular 1970s Afghan cotton dress in a gorgeous warm crimson red, featuring an extraordinary embroidered bodice framed in deep black velvet.
Likely made in Afghanistan for the European market during the 1970s, this is a beautiful example of the period’s distinctive Afghan dresses, combining traditional textile techniques with a wonderfully dramatic, wearable silhouette.
The focal point is the richly decorated front yoke, featuring intricate swirling embroidery in muted red, pink and gold tones, arranged around a striking metallic gold cross-shaped motif. The embroidery has the character of an older textile, possibly incorporated into the dress during its original construction, as was often the case with Afghan garments of this period.
Deep black velvet frames the embroidered panel and continues across the back of the bodice, creating a beautiful contrast against the saturated red cotton.
The dress has an exceptionally lovely silhouette, with a gently shaped, high waist giving way to an enormously full, finely gathered skirt. Wide, flowing sleeves with embroidered cuffs add to its dramatic proportions, while delicate vertical decorative stitching and embroidered borders along the hem provide further detail.
The back is particularly interesting, featuring a contrasting black panel extending down through the skirt, finished with geometric embroidery along the hem. A concealed nylon zip at the side allows the fitted bodice to be slipped on more easily.
Made from lightweight cotton, the dress has wonderful movement and volume without feeling overly heavy. A truly special piece that can be styled simply with boots or dressed up with jewellery and accessories.
Like many Afghan dresses of this period, the garment has an individual, handmade character rather than the uniform finish of mass-produced clothing. Small variations in the textile work and construction are part of its charm and history.
