Size & Fit

Size & Fit

Approximately EU 36–38 / UK 8–10 / US 4–6, depending on individual proportions.

Although labelled a vintage L, the dress fits considerably smaller by contemporary sizing standards, particularly through the fitted underbust and waist.

The bust measures approximately 90 cm in circumference, with an 82 cm underbust and a 76 cm waist. The skirt is exceptionally full and falls freely over the hips.

The shoulder measurement of 34 cm refers to the structured upper yoke rather than conventional shoulder seams. The generously cut sleeves extend outward from the bodice, allowing considerably more room through the shoulders and upper arms than this measurement might suggest.

The sleeves measure 61 cm when laid flat, but their gathered, buttoned cuffs mean they blouse over the wrists when worn rather than falling to their full measured length.

Please pay particular attention to the bust, underbust and waist measurements, as these are the most important areas for fit.

Shown on a model wearing approximately EU 36.

Description

A beautiful 1970s Afghan dress in soft, flowing black viscose, featuring an intricately embroidered bodice, rich black velvet and an extraordinarily full, finely gathered skirt.

A particularly lovely example of the Afghan dresses produced during the 1970s, combining traditional textile details with a wonderfully romantic, wearable silhouette.

The dress is made from lightweight, fluid 100% viscose with a soft, almost washed-black appearance. The fitted bodice features panels of deep black velvet framing an elaborate embroidered central yoke, worked in muted shades of burgundy, dusty pink, green, blue and antique gold. The embroidery has a wonderful aged character and may incorporate older textile elements into the dress’s original construction.

A richly embroidered band sits just beneath the bust, defining the high waist before the fabric falls into an exceptionally full skirt. The generous amount of fabric creates beautiful movement, with fine gathers that open into a dramatic, sweeping silhouette.

The long, voluminous sleeves are gathered into fitted, buttoned cuffs, each decorated with intricate embroidery and small mirrored details. The back of the bodice is finished in black velvet, providing a lovely contrast in texture.

The dress fastens with buttons at the side and retains its original vintage size L label and 100% viscose composition label.

Despite its dramatic proportions, this is an incredibly versatile piece. The soft fabric and understated black colour make it easy to dress up or down, equally beautiful worn casually with boots or styled with jewellery for an evening occasion.

A wonderfully individual piece of 1970s Afghan clothing, full of texture, movement and history.

Condition

Very good vintage condition, with a beautiful, naturally aged patina.

There is some fading and variation in the black fabric, giving it a soft, lived-in appearance characteristic of a garment of this age. The embroidery also displays small irregularities and variations in the threads, consistent with its traditional textile construction and vintage character.

These details contribute to the individuality and history of the piece rather than detracting from its appearance.

No holes, tears or structural issues.
