Description
1970s Indian Embroidered Cotton Skirt
A radiant 1970s Indian cotton skirt, richly hand-embroidered in vivid threads of yellow, green, pink, red, and white against a deep purple ground. Traditional mirrorwork accents are set throughout, designed to catch the light and ward off negative energy. The embroidery draws on centuries-old techniques from Punjab and Gujarat, with Phulkari-inspired florals, stylised birds, and protective animals like horses, as well as vases overflowing with blooms — each symbol carrying meaning tied to prosperity, abundance, and good fortune.
These skirts were part of the great wave of Indian textiles exported in the 1960s and 70s, eagerly adopted in the West for their artistry, folkloric spirit, and connection to handmade tradition. A true piece of wearable history, blending cultural heritage with 70s bohemian fashion.
This full-circle shape moves beautifully when worn and styles effortlessly with simple tops, suede or denim jackets, or cowboy boots for a modern festival-ready look.
