Vintage 1970s Indigo Cotton Peacock Dress – Bohemian India Revival with Symbolic Print

This original 1970s dress is a stunning example of the era’s fascination with Indian textiles, symbolism, and craft. Made from softly crinkled indigo-dyed cotton gauze, it features amazing wide gathered sleeves, a high empire waist, and an easy, flowing silhouette that flatters without clinging.

What truly sets this piece apart is its hand-printed border of regal peacocks — a powerful symbol of beauty, pride, and spiritual awakening. During the 1960s and 70s, peacocks became a recurring motif in bohemian and psychedelic fashion, drawing on both Indian mythology (where the peacock is sacred to the goddess Saraswati) and Western countercultural symbolism. They were seen as icons of self-expression, freedom, and feminine power — making this dress not only visually stunning but richly meaningful.

The deep indigo ground and soft natural dyes lend the dress a richness and subtlety that only age and craftsmanship can provide. Likely made for export from India during the height of the hippie trail era, it speaks to a moment when fashion became a vehicle for cross-cultural dialogue and spiritual exploration.
