Description
1970s Deadstock Afghan Plissé Butterfly Tunic
A spectacular deadstock Afghan tunic from the 1970s, crafted in a silky plissé satin (likely rayon or acetate) that shimmers with an almost liquid sheen. The fabric is permanently pleated into fine vertical lines, creating a sculptural effect that moves with every step. Wide butterfly sleeves cascade dramatically, catching the light and air.
The yoke features a delicately embroidered butterfly motif — a symbol of transformation and freedom, perfectly suited to the bohemian spirit of the era. The colour is a luminous, vibrant green, an extraordinary shade that feels both natural and otherworldly.
These tunics were exported from Afghanistan to Europe in the 1970s, sold in hippie boutiques alongside Afghan coats and Indian block prints. They epitomised the meeting of Afghan artisanal craft with Western counterculture’s hunger for flowing, ethereal fashion.
Unworn and preserved in exceptional condition, this piece is deadstock — a rare chance to own a garment that has survived untouched for half a century.
