Description
An extraordinary antique French cotton petticoat dress dating to the Edwardian era or very early 1910s, likely originating from rural western France. Found amongst a collection of farmhouse-stored antique textiles in a Paris flea market, this piece has all the beautiful signs of authentic early domestic construction — intricate panel work, gathered insertion seams, layered shaping through the skirt, and sturdy utilitarian craftsmanship designed for everyday wear.
Made from a wonderfully weighty textured white cotton with woven stripe detailing throughout, this piece was originally intended as an undergarment, yet now wears beautifully as a modern summer dress in its own right. The construction is particularly special: the skirt has a softly architectural quality with layered volume and carefully engineered shaping that almost creates a subtle fishtail effect in movement. The textile itself feels incredibly durable and wearable despite its age — these garments were made to withstand regular washing and daily use over multiple outfits.
What makes this piece especially remarkable is that it is likely around 120 years old, yet remains entirely wearable today. It has that rare balance antique garments sometimes possess: deeply historical while somehow feeling completely contemporary at the same time.
Features side press stud closures.
Condition:
Very good antique condition overall considering age. Structurally strong and highly wearable. The cotton remains sturdy rather than delicate. There are areas of gentle wear consistent with age, including slight nubbing to the fabric and some faint, scattered discolouration in places. Nothing especially distracting when worn, but this is not a pristine archival piece — rather a beautifully lived-in antique garment with visible history and character.
