Edwardian to Early 1920s Angora & Tulle Bed Jacket / Capelet

A truly enchanting antique bed jacket/capelet dating from the Edwardian period to the early 1920s. Combining a wonderfully soft blush pink angora layer with an ethereal overlay of embroidered tulle, it is finished with its original silk ribbon tie and beautifully captures the romantic elegance of the early twentieth century.

The delicate tulle overlay is lavishly embellished with raised soutache embroidery, intricate floral motifs and finely worked decorative detailing, while the soft angora beneath adds warmth, texture and a beautiful depth of colour. A finely crocheted trim frames the edges, and the original silk ribbon fastening completes this exceptionally feminine piece.

Rarely found in such wearable condition, this is a beautiful example of early twentieth-century lingerie or boudoir wear. Whether styled as a romantic bed jacket, worn as a delicate capelet over a silk slip or bridal gown, or displayed as part of an antique textile collection, it is a truly special survivor.

Condition

Very good wearable antique condition. The angora, embroidery, ribbon and crocheted edging are all beautifully preserved. There is a faint brownish mark to a small area of the tulle at the lower back, visible only on close inspection due to the transparency of the fabric, and likely the result of age rather than wear. There are also two very small gaps in the tulle, neither of which affects the stability or wearability of the piece. Overall, it presents beautifully for its age.
