Size & Fit

Size & Fit

Approximately EU 34–38 / UK 6–10 / US 2–6, potentially accommodating a smaller EU 40 / UK 12 / US 8 depending on individual proportions.

Shown on our EU 36 model, on whom it has a lovely, softly fitted silhouette without appearing oversized.

Although the blouse measures approximately 99 cm around the bust and 92 cm around the waist, the antique cotton and intricate crochet lace have very little give. We therefore recommend allowing several centimetres of ease between your body measurements and those of the garment, particularly across the bust and shoulders.

The arm openings are relatively narrow and should also be taken into consideration when assessing fit.

Please compare all measurements carefully with a similar garment that fits comfortably.

Description

An extraordinary original Edwardian blouse, dating approximately from the 1900s–1910s, featuring an exceptionally intricate front of likely handmade Irish crochet guipure lace, combined with delicate ivory cotton broderie anglaise.

Sourced in Paris, this is a truly remarkable example of early 20th-century textile craftsmanship, with an extraordinary level of detail throughout.

The entire front is composed of elaborate Irish crochet guipure lace, featuring beautifully raised floral motifs, intricate rosettes, scrolling patterns, elongated decorative forms and delicate openwork mesh connecting the individual elements. The combination of fine crochet stitches and more substantial, dimensional motifs gives the lace an almost sculptural quality.

Irish crochet lace has a fascinating history. Developed into an important cottage industry in Ireland during the 19th century, particularly during and following the Great Famine, it provided an essential source of income for many women and families. Inspired by expensive European needle laces, Irish crochet developed its own distinctive character through individually worked floral motifs, raised detailing and elaborate connecting networks. By the late Victorian and Edwardian periods, it had become highly fashionable and was incorporated into luxurious blouses, bodices and dresses.

The blouse fastens down the centre front with a beautiful row of tiny mother-of-pearl buttons, adding another exceptionally delicate detail.

The back and short sleeves are made from fine ivory cotton broderie anglaise, embroidered throughout with tiny floral eyelets. The sleeves have a softly gathered shape and delicate scalloped edges, while the lace extends beautifully across the shoulders, creating a lovely transition between the contrasting textures.

The silhouette is softly fitted, with a short, gently shaped hem that sits beautifully above the waist of high-rise trousers or skirts.

Originally, a blouse of this kind would likely have been worn over a camisole or corset cover, with the intricate lace displayed as the decorative outer layer. Today, it is equally beautiful styled over a simple camisole, a contrasting bralette or worn with denim for an effortless combination of antique craftsmanship and contemporary dressing.

A truly special and increasingly rare piece of antique clothing, combining exceptional craftsmanship, delicate materials and a remarkably wearable silhouette.

Condition

Exceptional antique condition, particularly considering its age of approximately 110–125 years.

The ivory cotton and intricate lace are beautifully preserved, with no visible staining, holes, rips or tears noted upon inspection.

The reverse of the lace retains small thread ends consistent with the original joining or finishing of the crochet work.

As with all antique textiles of this age, this is a delicate piece and should be handled and worn with appropriate care.
