1960s Gujarati Embroidered Folk Skirt

An extraordinary vintage Indian folk skirt, dating from at least the 1960s, potentially older, and handcrafted from a substantial heavyweight cotton or cotton-linen blend. The upper panel is cut in deep navy, flowing into a rich crimson skirt lavishly decorated with traditional Gujarati embroidery.

This piece showcases several distinct embroidery techniques. One panel features beautifully worked floral Gujarati embroidery, while another is adorned with intricate geometric shisha (mirror work). The richly embroidered hem combines mirror work with further geometric borders, creating a wonderfully balanced composition of colour and craftsmanship.

A particularly fascinating detail is the presence of the original artisan’s pen markings beneath sections of the embroidery—evidence of the handmade process and a rare glimpse into the maker’s working method.

Finished with a fully adjustable drawstring waist, the skirt can be worn across a broad range of sizes while retaining its beautiful full silhouette.

Condition
