Size & Fit

Size & Fit

Approximately EU 36–40 / UK 8–12 / US 4–8, depending on individual proportions and desired fit.

Please note that this jacket fits considerably smaller than the flat measurements might suggest due to the substantial thickness of the shearling interior. The silhouette itself is naturally boxy, with broad, slightly dropped shoulders.

The sleeves are on the shorter side at 49 cm / 19.3 in. On narrower shoulders, the generous 45 cm / 17.7 in shoulder width drops further down the arm and effectively adds to the wearable sleeve length. The sleeves fit well on our EU 36 model, while they were noticeably shorter when tried on an EU 38 model with broader shoulders.

We particularly recommend comparing both the shoulder and sleeve measurements with a similar jacket that fits you well.

Measurements

Measured flat:

Pit to pit: 55 cm / 21.7 in
Waist: 55 cm / 21.7 in
Hips: 61 cm / 24 in
Shoulders: 45 cm / 17.7 in
Sleeve: 49 cm / 19.3 in
Length: 68 cm / 26.8 in, including shearling trim

Description

An exceptional likely 1960s–70s Afghan style shearling jacket, potentially earlier, with one of the most extraordinary embroidered surfaces we have come across.

Rather than the more commonly seen scattered embroidery, virtually the entire cream outer surface is densely worked in tonal embroidery. Spirals, scrolling leaves and abstract botanical forms cover the jacket from front to back and continue across the sleeves, creating an incredibly intricate, almost brocade-like surface. The subtly lustrous cream embroidery catches the light beautifully against the leather beneath, giving the entire jacket its remarkable pearlescent appearance.

The jacket is framed with exceptionally full and fluffy cream shearling around the neckline, front opening, cuffs and hem, with the wonderfully plush fleece continuing throughout the interior. It fastens at the front with cord loops and painted wooden toggles.

Traditional Afghan pōstīn were constructed from dressed sheepskin with the fleece worn to the inside and the leather exterior embroidered, and unusually elaborate historical examples with extensive or all-over embroidery are documented. This unlabelled piece closely follows that tradition; however, without an original maker or provenance label, its precise place of manufacture and date cannot be definitively established.

The silhouette is short and boxy, with broad, slightly dropped shoulders and a straight body. An incredible statement piece of late-60s/70s bohemian outerwear and a particularly unusual example of the style.

Condition

Very good vintage condition, particularly considering its age and handmade construction. The extensive embroidery remains remarkably well preserved and the shearling is beautifully full and fluffy.

There are normal minor signs of age and wear throughout, including some rust-coloured staining/discolouration around one of the front toggles. No significant holes, tears or structural damage noted.
