1960s/70s Inky Black Embroidered Afghan Shearling Coat with Lambswool Lining

 An exceptional and highly collectible 1970s Afghan shearling coat, richly embroidered and trimmed in thick, satiny yak fur. What makes this piece particularly rare is the deep, inky black suede — an unusually rich and even black tone with no fading or brown undertones, which is seldom found in Afghan coats of this era.

The coat is constructed from firm black suede, densely worked with bold, graphic embroidery throughout the body and sleeves. The embroidery stands out strikingly against the saturated black ground, creating a contrast that is especially rare in examples that have retained such depth of colour.

The coat is finished with soft, full yak fur trim with a natural satiny sheen. It is fully lined with a shorter fur lining, providing warmth and structure without excessive bulk. The coat fastens at the front with three metal hook-and-eye closures and can be worn closed or left open.

Condition:

Good vintage condition, but the coat is around 60 years old and while there are no structural issues, there are signs of wear, as to be expected. The suede shows gentle, wear consistent with age, but the black suede is inky and rich, the the embroidery is intact and the lambswool remains full, soft and clean. HOWEVER: The lambswool lining is a of shorter variety which may feel prickly to sensitive wearers. Please take this into consideration before purchasing, and if you have sensory issues this may not be appropriate for you.  In addition, There is thinning of the lambs wool lining on the upper inside of the coat, around the shoulder area (please see pictures).

Works best for EU 38-40 (UK 10-12), but can be worn on smaller sizes oversized and with room for knitwear, or up to a smaller EU 42 worn open.

Model wears EU 36 (UK 8) and it fits but is very roomy, especially around the shoulders.
