Antique 1920s Embroidered Silk Duster/ Kimono – Egyptian Revival

Description
An exceptional and rare embroidered kimono-style duster robe dating to the 1920s, created at the height of the Egyptian Revival movement that swept through European fashion and decorative arts following the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922. Garments like this were designed as luxurious lounge and evening pieces, blending Eastern silhouettes with mythological and symbolic motifs inspired by antiquity and exoticism.
This piece appears to be made from black silk crepe, identifiable by its matte surface, fluid drape, and fine, lightly textured weave. It is richly hand embroidered throughout with dramatic dragons, butterflies, and symbolic ornamental motifs, rendered in soft, painterly tones that give the embroidery an almost watercolour-like effect. The embroidery combines East Asian–inspired imagery with Egyptian Revival symbolism, a highly characteristic and sought-after combination of the period. The colours are nuanced and subtle rather than bold, lending the piece an ethereal, romantic quality.
The robe is constructed as a long, open-front kimono or duster with wide sleeves and generous volume. It is designed to be worn open and does not come with a belt or tie. The tassel cord shown in some photographs is not included and is for styling purposes only. This piece can be worn open, belted with your own sash or cord, closed with a brooch or pin, or layered over dresses, trousers, knitwear, or lingerie. Despite its drama, it is extremely wearable and versatile.
Measurements (taken flat with the front panels just touching, no overlap; this is an open garment and fit is flexible):
Pit to pit: 62 cm
Waist: approx. 62 cm
Hip: 75 cm
Shoulders (across back): 52 cm
Sleeve drop (from shoulder): 62 cm
Arm opening: 28 cm
Full arm span: 127 cm
Total length: 150 cm
One size fits most. Due to the open construction and generous cut, this piece comfortably accommodates a wide range of sizes and can be styled with more or less overlap depending on preference.
Condition: very good antique condition with signs of age consistent with a silk garment of this period. There are scattered areas of light discolouration, likely caused by dye transfer from the embroidery threads, a few tiny and barely noticeable pinholes, and some loose embroidery threads. Structurally sound, sturdy, and wearable, and presents beautifully overall.
