Vintage Afghan Kuchi Dress
An extraordinary vintage Kuchi dress, brought to West Berlin from Afghanistan in the 1970s, where it was already considered old. This piece is a vibrant example of Central Asian nomadic dress, hand-constructed from an array of recycled silk, cotton and brocade textiles. The striking patchwork construction, densely embroidered yoke, and mirrorwork discs on the upper sleeves reflect the traditional ornamentation of the Kuchi people — a nomadic group historically based across Afghanistan, Pakistan, and parts of Iran.

Garments like these were worn as festive or ceremonial attire and often created over time by women in the community using inherited and traded textiles. The mirrors (shisha) and metallic threadwork were believed to ward off evil spirits, while the vivid colours and lavish detailing signified status, tribal identity and craftsmanship.

This dress features wide, pleated panels in shades of rich purple, green and red, flared sleeves with golden thread borders, and a deep, gathered skirt for dramatic movement. Despite its age, it remains remarkably wearable — a beautiful, tactile link to a nomadic textile tradition with centuries of history.

Era
Early-to-mid 20th century (likely 1930s–50s), composed of even older textile elements.

Material
Mixed textiles: likely silk, cotton, and brocade with metal threadwork and traditional embroidery. Handmade using pieced, repurposed fabrics.

Condition
Good for its age, with scattered holes, fraying, and signs of wear. Please see pictures. Please note the hole under the arm is on the outer superficial layer- the inner lining is still in tact and strong. Some mirrors are slightly dulled or missing — all consistent with the age and cultural production method. The dress is therefore sold as is. Structurally sound and ready to respectfully wear.

Size: XS- small busted S, bodice and shoulders are very narrow and this must be slipped over the head.

Measurements
Bust/Underbust: 40cm with no stretch. Actual body measurements must be smaller.

Styling Notes
A collector-worthy dress that remains utterly wearable (albeit with care). Style barefoot for a dreamy editorial look, or pair with statement shoes and silver jewellery to echo the Kuchi aesthetic.

Care Instructions
Please note due its age and the intricate and special nature of this piece, it has not been washed, and should not be washed. If cleaning is desired, must be taken to a professional. Due to the age, delicate materials, and intricate construction, we recommend careful spot cleaning only. Avoid soaking or machine washing. Store flat or gently folded in acid-free tissue to preserve shape and embroidery.
